Widely recognized as one of the crucial creative and influential musicians of the 20th century, Jimi Hendrix pioneered the explosive prospects of the electric guitar. So does jazz need to be in contrast with that? I don’t know, to be fairly sincere. There are good things and dangerous issues about it. However I believe, once again, this push for respect, for acceptance, for jazz wherever it goes—what it’s been and the unbelievable legacy and historic weight that it is carrying—should elevate it as much as that level of awareness and appreciation. But will we in the jazz scene need to be in contrast with that sense of just about static movement throughout the classical world where, as I mentioned before, no modern artist is going to be in comparison with Mozart or Beethoven? I’m undecided. That is the place I feel the comparison kind of falls brief.
